MULTILITERACIES CHALLENGES

1. Talking

In this challenge, we encourage you to stretch you and/or your students conception of what modern 'talking' can be. We can leverage digital technologies to talk in real-time or asynchronously using a variety of modes for a myriad of authentic purposes.

Aaron R. Gierhart is a third grade teacher in Geneseo, IL. As part of a social studies unit of instruction in which students described and differentiated between the three levels of government (local, state, and federal), he and his students interviewed a local alderman. 

 

After reading and discussing how city councils function, students brainstormed questions to ask the alderman using Padlet:

Next, the students participated in a video chat interview with the city alderman using Google Hangout:

Finally, students used the information they gained from the interview to write an opinion paragraph in which they could express their personal opinion about local government or the job of being an alderman on a city council. They published the final drafts of their opinion paragraphs on their individual blogs hosted on Blogger.
